Server Lag & Performance Issues

Server Lag & Performance
Types of Lag
- Network lag (high ping) — Players far from server location
- Server lag (low TPS) — Server can't process fast enough
- Client lag (low FPS) — Player's computer is too slow (not a server issue)
Fix Network Lag
- Choose a server location closest to the majority of players
- Check your internet connection and use wired instead of WiFi
- Close bandwidth-heavy applications
- Use a gaming VPN if routing is poor
Fix Server Lag
- Upgrade RAM — Most common fix for lag
- Reduce view/render distance in server config
- Limit entity counts — Too many animals, items, or dropped items
- Use performance-focused server software:
- Minecraft: Paper/Purpur (instead of Vanilla or Forge)
- Rust: CarbonMod (faster than Oxide)
- Valheim: ValheimPlus (performance tweaks)
- Schedule regular restarts — Clears memory leaks
- Clean up the world — Remove unused chunks, decay abandoned bases
Performance Monitoring
- TPS (Ticks Per Second): Target is 20 for Minecraft, 30 for most others
- RAM usage: Should stay below 85% of allocated
- CPU usage: Spikes are normal, sustained 100% is problematic
- Check in Dashboard → Server → Performance
